Caring for your ride after a road trip

Returning home from an epic summer road trip can leave you in the mood for relaxing; however, before you settle in too much it is vital that you provide your ride with some much needed care and attention. Here we will look at some of the most important elements to keep in mind.

Empty it out

The first thing you need to do is to totally empty your vehicle. Remove any camping gear and sporting equipment, as well as any litter, books, maps, tools, toys, or food that may have accumulated in there. Don’t forget to empty all those pouches, pockets, and compartments as well, as this will make it a whole lot easier to do a complete and thorough cleaning of the entire vehicle.

Clean the interior

Once you have completely emptied your vehicle, take the most powerful vacuum you can find and go over every crease, corner, and crevice. Aside from making your ride look a whole lot better, you will be seriously improving the quality of the air in there, not to mention that getting rid of any food crumbs will ensure that you aren’t attracting ants or other critters.

Protect your fabrics

Being exposed to hot, bright, and dry conditions can take a toll on your vehicle’s many various precious fabrics, meaning that now is the time to give them a little TLC. If in doubt, consult your Vehicle Owner’s Manual to find out exactly what your ride’s fabrics are made from, and then buy and apply the appropriate products according to their directions.

Repack essentials only

Resist the urge to put everything you emptied right back in your vehicle, rather, take an ‘essential items only’ approach. Not only will this help to reduce clutter and make it easier to keep your ride clean, but lightening your load will improve your fuel economy levels as well.

Wash the exterior

Now that the cabin of your vehicle is in order it is time to deal with the exterior, which means washing every inch. Pay particularly close attention to all of those hard-to-reach areas, such as the wheel wells and the underside of the vehicle; after all, this is where corrosion is most likely to develop.

Have it serviced

Thank your beloved ride for getting you home from your adventure safely by investing in a thorough servicing for it at your local dealership or mechanic. If you noticed any worrying signs or sounds during the course of your trip, be sure to mention them to your mechanic as well; otherwise, those issues will likely develop into more serious and expensive problems.
